Stage 2 Design and Technology - Communication Products
These web pages connect schools and teachers to information on procedures relating to final moderation and external assessment requirements. Key dates, including dates for the submission of results, are also provided.
Stage 2 Design and Technology may be undertaken as a 10-credit subject or a 20-credit subject, or as a combination of 10-credit subjects and/or 20-credit subjects.
For the SACE, students can complete up to 40 credits of Stage 2 Design and Technology in one of the following focus areas, or up to 60 credits in a combination of two or three of the focus areas:
- communication products
- material products
- systems and control products.

2019 is the last year of teaching the current Design and Technology — Communication Products. Renewed Stage 2 Design, Technology, and Engineering will be taught for the first time in 2020.
Online moderation and marking
In 2019, external assessment materials for Stage 2 Design and Technology — Communication Products will be submitted for online marking using investigation results sheets in Schools Online.

School assessment component
Teachers assess the evidence of student learning for:
- Assessment Type 1: Skills and Applications Tasks
- Assessment Type 2: Product.
The SACE Board quality assures the school assessment results through final moderation.

Moderation sample selection
Teachers select the moderation sample of school-assessed materials to submit to the SACE Board.

Preparing and collecting school assessment materials for final moderation
School assessment materials for Design and Technology are collected in late November (Round B).
Student materials for the sample for Design and Technology that is to be submitted to the SACE Board for final moderation must include all records of evidence from Assessment Type 1: Skills and Applications Tasks and the product record and evidence of completion from Assessment Type 2: Product. Evidence should include annotated photographs or digital recordings of the completed product or processes, and may include any other recorded or written material, or a checklist.
Supervision and verification
Refer to the information in Supervision and Verification of Students' Work: Policy and Procedures [DOC 90KB] on the use of the record sheet [DOC 164KB] to record and authenticate each student's work. If used, these sheets are to be kept in the school until the end of the clerical check period in February 2020.
A teacher who is unable to verify that the work is the student's own must initiate a breach of rules action through the school's SACE/NTCET coordinator.

External assessment component
For a 10-credit subject or a 20-credit subject, students undertake one external assessment, consisting of a folio that contains documentation and analysis of the product design process and product evaluation.
For a 10-credit subject, the combined evidence in the folio should be a maximum of 1000 words if written or a maximum of 6 minutes of recorded oral documentation of the design process and evaluation, or the equivalent in multimodal form.
For a 20-credit subject, the combined evidence in the folio should be a maximum of 2000 words if written or a maximum of 12 minutes of recorded oral documentation of the design process and evaluation, or the equivalent in multimodal form.

Submitting materials for external assessment

Assessment Type 3: Folio
This assessment type is categorised as an investigation for operational purposes. In Semester 2, investigation materials are collected in three rounds, Round 1, Round 2, and Round 3. Investigations for Design and Technology are submitted online by late October (Round 2).
The teacher assesses each student's folio and then submits all folios for the class to the SACE Board for external assessment.
Supervision and verification
Refer to Supervision and Verification of Students' Work: Policy and Procedures [DOC 90KB]. Teachers must use the record sheet [DOC 164KB] to record and authenticate each student's work. These sheets are to be kept in the school until the end of the clerical check period in February 2020.
A teacher who is unable to verify that a folio, or part of a folio, is the student's own work must submit a completed report of potential breach of rules [DOC 108KB] to the SACE Board, through the school's SACE/NTCET coordinator.
