Literacy and numeracy

The SACE has compulsory literacy and numeracy requirements:

  • Literacy – 20 credits from a range of English subjects at Stage 1 or Stage 2
  • Numeracy – 10 credits from a range of mathematics subjects at Stage 1 or Stage 2.

At Stage 1, you must achieve a C grade or better to gain your SACE. At Stage 2, you must achieve a C– grade or better.

You will meet the literacy requirement if you achieve a C grade or better in 20 credits of any of the following Board-accredited subjects:

  • Stage 1 English
  • Stage 1 English as an Additional Language
  • Stage 1 Essential English.

You can also meet the literacy requirement if you achieve a C– grade or better in 20 credits of any Stage 2 English subject.

To fulfil the numeracy requirement, you must receive a minimum C grade in 10 credits of any of the following Board-accredited subjects:

  • Stage 1 Mathematics
  • Stage 1 General Mathematics
  • Stage 1 Essential Mathematics.

You can also meet the numeracy requirement if you achieve a C– grade or better in 10 credits of any Stage 2 mathematics subject.

The SACE Board moderates Stage 1 English and mathematics subjects to confirm the accuracy of each school's use of the performance standards. This process occurs before you receive your final grades in the subject.
