Electronic exams (e-exams)

Electronic examinations (e-exams) will provide better examinations that are more authentic and relevant for students.

Computers are routinely used in students’ studies and moving to e-exams reflects this changing way of working.

Student learning will be assessed more creatively, maximising the opportunities for them to show what they have learned, how they can use it in unrehearsed situations, and the extent to which they have developed the SACE capabilities.

Since 2018, e-exams have been progressively introduced across a number of Stage 2 subjects.

In 2020, nine subjects have e-exams. We will make the 2020 e-exams available for viewing as soon as possible after each one is held. Find out more about each exam:

Students and community

The best preparation for any exam is learning the subject content.

Students should also learn how to use the electronic examinations system, so they feel comfortable and are familiar with it when they take final exams.

There are a number of resources to help students, like a demo e-exam and subject-specific exams. Students should also use their teachers and SACE coordinator to help prepare.

Schools

We have developed a readiness toolkit to help make sure schools are technically and operationally ready for e-exams.

This is for all staff who have a role in delivering e-exams:

  • SACE coordinators
  • IT managers
  • invigilators
  • markers
  • teachers

Teachers

E-exam information for teachers has been moved to the e-exam page in each subject's area (e.g. Stage 2 Biology e-exam).

There teachers will find past and sample exams and other information to help students prepare for an exam.

Key messages

  • Stage 2 English Literary Studies students were the first to sit an e-exam in 2018. Additional subjects are being progressively introduced.
  • E-exams will provide better assessment that is more authentic and relevant for students.
  • E-exams align with schools’ digital education plans.
  • E-exams recognise the ways students use computers in their learning and everyday lives.
  • As traditional paper-based marking arrangements transition to online the efficient transfer of data across the marking system will allow the SACE Board to improve the quality assurance of students’ results.
  • As the nature of teaching and learning continues to evolve as technology opens up new forms of learning and creative expression for students SACE examinations will evolve, enabling new things to be assessed in new ways.
  • The SACE Board is working with schools and the schooling sectors to ensure students can successfully participate in e-exams.
