Aboriginal Students
OverviewThis section of the website is for teachers, Aboriginal students, and their families and caregivers. Here you will find information about how the SACE can help Aboriginal students with their studies, and the different pathways Aboriginal students can take from the SACE to their future careers. « Previous | Next » | Show All Aboriginal voiceAboriginal people have a strong voice in the SACE. The SACE Board, which is the governing body for the SACE, has an Aboriginal member, Dr Jillian Miller. Dr Miller is the Coordinator, Indigenous Student Services, at the University of South Australia. Dr Miller is a Mirning woman and a former principal of Kaurna Plains School, and superintendent, Aboriginal Education, with the Department of Education and Child Development. The SACE Board has a SACE Aboriginal Education Strategy and the Steering Committee for this strategy has a high representation of Aboriginal members. More information: « Previous | Next » | Show All Aboriginal perspectives in subjectsSACE subject outlines contain a statement encouraging teachers to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, cultures, and perspectives in their subjects. The statement says: In partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and schools, the SACE Board supports the development of high quality learning and assessment design that respects the diverse knowledge, cultures, and perspectives of Indigenous Australians. The SACE Board encourages teachers to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and perspectives in the design, delivery, and assessment of teaching and learning programs, by:
Personal Learning Plan In the Personal Learning Plan, and throughout the SACE, students work with teachers, families and supporters to identify their goals and assess their progress in reaching them. Research Project The SACE includes a Research Project subject at Stage 2 as well as other flexible subject offerings that enable Aboriginal students to research Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, cultures and practices as they relate to families and local communities. This opportunity is supported by a set of culturally appropriate protocols which are also included in the SACE Board’s Ethical Conduct of Research Policy. More information:
« Previous | Next » | Show All Aboriginal Student Pathways ConferenceA SACE Aboriginal Students Pathways Conference is held every year. This conference provides the opportunity for Year 10, 11 and 12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to explore their study, training and employment pathways. Aboriginal students have diverse talents and aspirations, and the SACE offers a pathway for every student – whether they are planning to go to university or TAFE, begin a traineeship or apprenticeship, or move straight into the workforce. The 2012 Aboriginal Student Pathways Conference will be held on Wednesday, 13 June at the University of Adelaide. At the conference, students will identify a broad range of aspirations, including employment in the sports, mining, defence, technology, art/design and music industries. More information:

The poster, which is distributed to all schools, features the photographs and names of Aboriginal students who achieved their SACE in 2011.
