Advice on Preparing Materials
Stage 1
Overview
At Stage 1 SACE subjects are 100% school assessed . This means all your work is assessed by teachers at your school. Only the compulsory subjects: the Personal Learning Plan, and the literacy and numeracy subjects, are moderated by the SACE Board.
At Stage 1, you will receive grades (from A to E) for each subject. Descriptions of each grade are included in the subject outlines for each subject and are called ‘performance standards'.
Teachers can use performance standards to:
- show each student what is required to be successful in his or her learning
- design assessments that assist students to demonstrate their learning at the highest possible level of achievement
- make decisions about the quality of the learning.
Students can use performance standards to:
- decide how to demonstrate their learning in ways most appropriate to them
- monitor their progress
- understand what is expected of them at the end of a learning program.

The Personal Learning Plan is a compulsory subject, which most students undertake in Year 10. It's worth 10 credits, and you need to achieve a C grade or higher to gain the SACE.
The Personal Learning Plan gives you the chance to identify your plans and goals for the future, helping you make informed decisions about your personal development, education and training.
If you already have a career in mind, the Personal Learning Plan provides a chance for you to explore university, TAFE, and apprenticeship or traineeship courses or pathways.
For students who don't know what they want to do yet, the subject will give you an idea of what careers might interest you and the kinds of subjects you can study to maximize your choices in the future.
The Personal Learning Plan is your introduction to the five SACE capabilities – Citizenship, Communication, Learning, Professional Development and Work. You'll learn what capabilities you need for your future, as well as how to develop and improve them.
You will also come out of the subject with a plan to get you where you want to go. Your plan isn't set in stone – the idea is to get you thinking about what your options are and what path you might like to take.

SACE subjects are 100% school assessed at Stage 1. This means all your work is marked by teachers at your school.
At Stage 1, you will receive grades (from A to E) for each subject. Descriptions of each grade are included in the subject outlines for each subject and are called ‘performance standards'. The performance standards describe in detail the five levels of achievement.
Performance standards are more than a tool for deciding grades — they also offer opportunities for teachers and students to improve the quality of their teaching and learning. Students can refer to the performance standards to monitor their progress and better understand what is expected of them in a subject.
The compulsory subjects are ‘moderated' by the SACE Board. This means that, for the Personal Learning Plan and the compulsory literacy and numeracy requirements, SACE Board experts check student work and teachers' assessment decisions to ensure you are being graded fairly and consistently with other students across the state.
There is a SACE Board policy in place – called Special Provisions – which allows alternative arrangements for students who have difficulty completing an assessment task because they are affected by illness, impairment, or a personal circumstance. Visit the link below for more information about how these work.
