Advice on Preparing Materials
SACE Student Skills
Overview
The aim of the SACE is to develop well-rounded, capable young people who can make the most of their potential and make a valuable contribution to the workforce from the outset.
Throughout their SACE, students develop citizenship and employability skills. Each SACE subject includes learning requirements that cover five capabilities: Communication, Citizenship, Personal Development, Work and Learning.
The purpose of the capabilities is to help connect students’ learning with the personal attributes needed to live, work and be an active citizen in an ever-changing society.
Students are able to demonstrate how effectively they have mastered these capabilities through the compulsory SACE subjects and requirements:
- Personal Learning Plan (Planning Skills)
- Research Project (Skills for the Workplace)
- Literacy and Numeracy

Students are able to develop planning skills through the compulsory Stage 1 subject, the Personal Learning Plan, usually undertaken in Year 10.
The Personal Learning Plan helps students plan for their future by:
- identifying their strengths and weaknesses
- making informed decisions about the subjects they will study in Years 11 and 12, and any courses outside of school
- identifying possible career choices and ideas for community service
- considering how best to prepare for their career options and other goals.

Students develop their research, analysis, evaluation and project management skills through the compulsory Stage 2 (Year 12) subject, the Research Project.
The Research Project gives students the opportunity to research a topic of interest over the course of a semester, collate and present their findings, and provide an evaluation of their research processes and learning.
They use their creativity and initiative, while developing the research and presentation skills they will need in further study or work.
As part of the Research Project, students work with, survey and interview people in the community, and may approach businesses with requests for interviews or information.
The SACE Board encourages organisations to accommodate these requests if possible, which will strengthen the link between business, SACE students and the skills they develop as part of the Research Project.

The SACE has compulsory literacy and numeracy requirements.
Each student needs to earn 20 credits from a choice of Stage 1 or 2 English subjects or recognised courses.
Likewise, each student must earn 10 credits from a range of Stage 1 or Stage 2 mathematics subjects or recognised courses.
At Stage 1, the student must achieve a C grade or better to achieve their SACE. At Stage 2, the student must achieve a C- grade or better.
The grade benchmark (C and C-) has been set at Level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework for literacy and numeracy skills. This is determined as the acceptable level needed for adults to function effectively in today’s society.
The C and C- grade requirement ensures students will be literate and numerate when they achieve their SACE.
