Key Information

‘CLICK HERE: What are the essential teaching materials for this subject?’

Students develop their knowledge of scientific principles and concepts, the ability to use that knowledge to identify questions, issues, opportunities and challenges, and the capacity to acquire new knowledge through their own investigations. They develop the skills and abilities to explain scientific phenomena, and to draw evidence-based conclusions from the investigation of science-related issues. In this way, students develop scientific knowledge and skills to support them in their future career pathways, including those that are science-related, and everyday life in a world shaped by science and technology.

Assessment and Reporting

Assessment and reporting in the SACE is based on the central partnership between the SACE Board and the school for the quality of SACE assessment. Assessment in both SACE Stage 1 and Stage 2 subjects emphasises the important place of teacher judgement about the quality of student learning against a subject’s performance standards.

This judgement is supported by comprehensive systems of quality assurance.

The two documents which explain the details are available for download below. Further details of the policies upon which these documents are based are available on the policy pages of the website.

Monitoring of Stage 1 grades

The SACE Board monitors the reporting of grades A to E for Stage 1 subjects as part of the quality assurance cycle on a cyclical basis.

Monitoring seeks to determine the consistency with which the performance standards in a subject are used to assess and report student achievement. Each year, 2 or 3 subjects will be selected for monitoring.

History and Chemistry have been selected for 2012. Monitoring is a post-hoc process to analyse and identify improvement strategies in the assessment processes. Students' results are not changed as part of the monitoring process.

Teachers who wish to apply to be part of the monitoring panel may submit an Expression of Interest.

General Information

Welcome to the SACE Board’s support materials for Stage 1 subjects. Support materials are being uploaded progressively and include:

  • sample learning and assessment plans
  • annotated assessment tasks
  • annotated student responses
  • recommended resource materials.

Support materials are developed in collaboration with teachers and SACE Board Curriculum Leaders’ Groups, or derived from pilot programs coordinated by the future SACE Office. Teachers are invited to submit material for possible inclusion in Support Materials by contacting the relevant Curriculum Services Officer.

Every reasonable attempt has been made to ensure these materials have been cleared for copyright purposes. The SACE Board welcomes contact from anyone from whom permission has not been sought.

Purpose

These support materials are designed to further develop teachers’ understanding of:

  • assessment task design, and
  • assessing students’ evidence of learning using the assessment design criteria and performance standards.

Annotations within the support materials describe:

  • what teachers should consider when developing learning and assessment plans and assessment tasks
  • evidence of how the students’ responses meet the specific features of the assessment design criteria.

Annotated student responses help teachers to see the quality of work produced by students with reference to the performance standards.
